01What the Pensionado visa is
Honduras' Pensionado residency is a permanent-residency category built for retirees who receive a guaranteed lifetime income — a government pension, Social Security, a company pension or an annuity. It is the route the majority of North American and European retirees on Roatán use to live on the island legally, year-round, without visa runs.
Unlike a tourist stay, Pensionado status gives you a Honduran residency card, a tax identification number, the ability to open resident bank accounts, and — critically — the right to import your household goods and a vehicle with substantial duty relief.
02Who qualifies
The core requirement is a demonstrable lifetime income of roughly US$1,500 per month from a pension source (the figure is set by Migración Honduras and adjusts periodically). A spouse and dependent children can be added to the same application. You do not need to purchase property to qualify, and you never renounce your home citizenship.
Applicants provide a certified pension letter, a clean criminal-record certificate from their country of residence, a birth certificate, a medical certificate and a valid passport. All foreign documents are apostilled and translated by a Honduran sworn translator — our facilitator handles both.
03Timeline and cost
A well-prepared file is typically approved within four to eight months. The government fees, legal fees, translations and apostilles together usually land in the low thousands of dollars per applicant — a fraction of comparable programs in Panama or Costa Rica.
Once approved, you receive a residency card renewable every five years. You must spend some time in Honduras each year to keep it active, though the requirement is modest and easily met by anyone who actually lives on the island.
04The import benefit most people miss
Pensionado residents may import personal household goods and one vehicle with significant exemption from import duties — a benefit worth many thousands of dollars for a couple bringing furniture, appliances and a car to Roatán.
Timing matters: the exemption is claimed during the residency process, so we coordinate your shipment schedule with the application so nothing sits in the Puerto Cortés customs yard accruing storage fees.

Pensionado is a non-working residency. A spouse who wants to run a business typically holds shares in a Honduran company or applies for a separate category; our legal desk structures this case by case.
Will I be taxed in Honduras on my foreign pension?
Honduras taxes income earned in Honduras. Foreign pension income is generally not taxed locally, though your home country's rules continue to apply — we coordinate with your tax advisor.
How long can I stay as a tourist before I need residency?
Most nationalities receive 90 days on arrival, extendable once. Residency removes the ceiling entirely and is far less stressful than repeated extensions.
